::::::::STOCKINGS::::::::

Mas stockings are not your usual panty hose which do not have the strength to stand up to the rigours of Crop-Over day. The proper stockings are sheer to the waist tights that are made with lycra. The super shiny, orange stockings that they make for "tan" people are a negative.

If you plan on wearing mas stockings to prevent your toes from suffering, cut off the toe part so that your toes will be free. If you are one to cut the stockings to the ankle, use a clear nail polish to "seal" the edges. A very important tip is to get the correct size stockings so as to ensure against runs or gaping tears.

Not many people think of wearing underwear UNDER their stockings, a simple cotton thong is excellent for allowing your regions to breathe. Even though pantyhose are lined with a sliver of cotton at the crotch area, it is often times not enough protection between your genitals and the pantyhose. You do not want to end up with yeast infections because the pantyhose are made from a synthetic material that traps heat and moisture which is an ideal breeding ground for diseases.

Wear stockings! Unless you have your own body guards on the road, stockings will act as a protective barrier between you and the "bodily fluids" from the masses.

MAKE-UP TIPS

Crop-Over is the perfect time of year to go beyond with your make-up. Compliment your gorgeous costume with face jewels, glitter and metallic eye shadows to have every photographer’s camera on you as you make your way to Spring Garden Highway.

Here are some tips on how to apply face jewels and glitter. Don't be afraid to experiment with different patterns and themes - after all this is what Kadooment is all about!

Prepare the Face:
Prepare your skin with a moisturizer with at least a SPF 15. Blend your concealer, (if needed)into the skin followed by your foundation. If you can get a foundation with a SPF, you will get double the sun protection.

Make sure you set with a light dusting of powder and a mist of makeup setting spray. This is essential since you want the makeup to last under the extreme conditions of heat and perspiration.

  1. Fill in the brows with a dark brown or black eyebrow pencil.
  2. Line the eyes with a black eye pencil or whatever shade takes your fancy.
  3. This is the time to go wild with your silver or gold liners.
  4. If you want to add smoky definition to the eye, do this with your darkest shade of shadow such as black, brown or dark blue.

Applying Your Glitter:

Choose the shades of glitter that best compliment your complexion and the hues of your costume. Glitter comes in three forms: powders, gels and lotions. Choose the one you feel most comfortable using.

The Eyes:
You can use different shades of glitter on the eye to add depth and dimension. Light colored glitter such as gold, silver or iridescent can be used under the eye brows with a medium hue on the eyelids. The smokey effect you added at the face preparation stage, will add that depth on the eye without too much mess or fuss.

The Body:
You can choose to put glitter all over your body or select focal points such as chest, décolletage, arm, back and lower legs. Use baby oil or baby oil gel as a base so that your glitter dust will adhere easily.

Key Tip:
A cotton bud dipped in baby oil makes a great application tool because it helps the glitter to move easily from your container to the face and gives you more control in the application. There is also glitter glue that can be used for more long lasting results.

Mess Control:
Glitter is a very messy substance to work with, so if you want to maintain glitter primarily on the eye area, ask a friend to hold a folded page just under your eye while you are applying the glitter.

APPLYING FACE JEWELS:

- It is a good idea to figure out the pattern and design you would like to achieve with your face jewels before actually attempting to stick them on. Remember you have already applied your foundation and powder so you want to minimise any smudging or damage of the surface.

- You can place the jewels on the face without the glue (they will hold on for a few minutes!) while you conceptualize your design.

- Once you have your masterpiece defined, apply a dot of eyelash glue or spirit glue to the back of the jewel. Remember, just a dot! Do not apply too much glue otherwise when you press it onto the skin it will spread out around the jewel, creating an unsightly mess.

- Allow glue to set about 15 seconds before applying to the face. Try to gauge exactly where you will be putting the jewel before sticking it on to the face so you won't have to drag it.

Continue until you have completed your design and voila you are ready for Kadooment day!

FACE JEWELS: - PEACOCK LOOK

There are ways to create a beautiful look on your own for Kadooment day.
Following is a step-by-step guide that will bring out your own peacock-enhanced beauty.

You will need:

  • Turquoise blue eyeshadow

  • Dark green eyeshadow

  • Pink lipstick or glittered lip gloss

  • Crystal eyeshadow or glitter

  • Gems- all shades and sizes of blue and pink

  • Spirit gum- Special make-up glue.
Make-up

Apply your foundation and powder and allow it to set before the application of the gems.

Using spirit gum, lightly dot the areas that you want your gems to be placed, allow them at least 15 seconds to dry before sharp movements.

Use your turquoise eye shadow over the entire eye socket area. Apply a few coats to intensify the colour.

Use the dark green shadow in the creases and corners. It doesn’t have to be neat or precise for this application to look great.

FAKE EYE LASHES:

For those divas who might just want to glam it up for Kadooment day, the eyelash strip will work as you can remove them at the end of the day.

Makeup artist Crysande Hachst of the Trinidad Express WOMAN magazine has a how to guide on applying lashes.Your favourite stars like Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez have a secret to their red-carpet glamour-false eyelashes. These are great for bringing out your eyes, making you look more feminine and alluring. They also make you look fabulous in photos.

So for Kadooment day, you may want to try false eyelashes to put that extra oomph into your diva look. It is easier than you might think to apply and no one has to know your secret but you!

Everyone will be commenting that you look different, they just won't know why.

Afraid you will end up looking like a drag queen?

Falsies come in all colours, lengths and styles, so to achieve a natural eyelash enhancement, select a lash style and colour which would blend in most easily with your own lashes. Of course for Crop Over you can go wild with different colours and extravagant lengths for the season.

Guide on applying false eyelashes

Step 1:
Making your new lashes pliable. Take your eyelash strips from the case and bend each one gently back and forth to make them more pliable and easy to handle.

Steps 2 & 3:
Measure and clip. Place the strip of eyelashes against your eye to check the length against the length of your eye. If the strip is too long, then cut off a few lashes, using a pair of cuticle scissors so that it is the exact length of your eye. I have seen some ladies with false eyelashes extending far beyond the length of their eye. This, of course, would not contribute towards achieving a natural look. So remember to measure and then trim if necessary!

Step 4:
Applying the glue. Many people ask me if the false eyelashes will fall off and embarrass them in public. My answer to that is to use a good quality waterproof eyelash glue that can withstand tears and humidity.Place your glue in a narrow strip on a regular kitchen toothpick. Then, apply this glue to the band of your false lashes. Allow to dry for 30 seconds or until the glue becomes tacky. What do we mean by tacky? When the glue loses its liquid consistency and becomes sticky.

Step 5:
Putting on the falsies. Next, put the false lashes on the base of your natural lashes. Start from the outer corner of the eye and, once the outer corner has adhered, start working your way inward, pressing the false lashes to lash line until the entire band is attached.

Step 6:
Finishing touches. Leave the lashes on for a few minutes to ensure the glue is completely dried, then apply a black, dark brown or navy liner, depending on your look, to the band so that it is not visible.

DIVA TIPS:

Always carry a small "survival pack" on the road. It's usually a small pouch that includes items like sample sized sun block, wet wipes, safety pins, mini-deodorant, pain killers, clear nail polish (for stocking runs on the road), a cell phone, vex money, powder, oil absorbing sheets and lip gloss.

Always carry sun block with you in a small vial or a sample size so you can re-apply as necessary.

To keep makeup in place, use a lightweight moisturizing sunscreen with a HIGH SPF (45+) like Neutrogena. Then, spray a VERY HIGH (60+) sunscreen all over your body and go lie down for a little while and let it absorb into your skin. Ideally it should be in an air conditioned room, but if A/C is not an option, just lie in the coolest part of the house. After about fifteen minutes, get up and apply your makeup. Your skin feels like it has been freshly washed because everything is already absorbed!

To make cosmetics last, a PRIMER can be used for almost everything. There are eye shadow, mascara, and lipstick primers that are applied before regular make-up to make it last. Primers can be purchased at Clinique and Mac.

Makeup must always be in tact. In order to accomplish a fresh face all day it is advisable to get your face professionally done by a competent makeup artist. This also helps in preventing your face from becoming sun burnt as the makeup protects your face, while enhancing your fabulous diva look. You don't want to be seen on TV with your face looking greasy and tacky.

Footwear- Ladies please wear comfortable shoes, sneakers or whatever you desire to wear on your feet. If wearing sneakers, make sure wear them at least a month before Kadooment day, if you can't well there's always "Dr Scholls". Some people often play mas in gym sneakers because they are already "broken in" and comfortable so it gives support all day.

It's a good idea to designate a pre-arranged meeting area in case you or anyone else in your "crew" gets lost. Also, have the address of where you are staying and a contact number for someone close to you on hand.

You do not have to wait until the costume collection day to pay the balance on your costume. All bands accept part payments towards your costume periodically, for example you can make payments monthly. Not only does this ease the burden of having to pay up the balance of $200.00 in August, but it also saves time when you go to collect your costume.

Even though Kadooment is a time to "free up" always make safety your first priority.

DO NOT accept drinks from strangers.
DO NOT
wear expensive jewelry.
DO NOT wander away into lonely, dark areas. If you need to use the toilet always go with a companion.

Some bands provide mobile restrooms, if yours does not, many bars along the Black Rock stretch line the parade route which allow you to use their facilities. Always, take along a friend as some of these bars may have seedy characters loitering around.

To prevent sunstroke make use of the cool-zones provided by the band, drink cool liquids and always wear proper headgear; headpiece and/or bandanas or hats.

If you have to purchase something to eat, try to stay away from anything that has mayonnaise as an ingredient, looks like it was cooked earlier and has been sitting in a glass case all day or the vendor/premises does not look sanitary. Look for food that either comes in a sealed package or is prepared fresh.

Taking along a camera? Leave the expensive digital at home and walk with a disposable instead. Cameras can be easily lost, broken or stolen.
For the ladies, if you are expecting your period around or on Carnival day it is advisable to wear a tampon instead of a pad. If you must wear a pad, wear the ultra thins.

Do not forget to WAX if you plan on going sans stockings, or for the least SHAVE!! No one wants to see your pubic hairs showing in your thong as you wuk-up or lift your leg up!

For ladies with larger breasts, tape is recommended to keep your breasts from popping out of your bra while you are jumping up. It's very simple to do, use the tape much like those "stick on" bras, taping from one side of the breast to the other so the tape cups the breast in a U shape and keeps it firmly supported. You can do more than one row of tape until you feel them firmly taped in place.

After you are done taping, try on your bra and make sure none of the tape is showing, if any of the edges of the tape are peeking out, you can trim them with scissors. Please DO NOT use duct tape, and do not tape over your nipples. A wide stretchy bandage called elastoplast or a tape made specifically for this called Fashion Tape, or Bondage Tape is recommended. Be careful when removing the tape, use baby oil to moisten the edges and gently remove.

hey there
lovely site! keep up the good work

another cool thing that me and my friend Daana discovered when it comes to putting on glitter is that if you mix it with your sun block (baby faces 50 is excellent) it will apply smoothly AND you have sunblock coverage as well
baby oil I find can lead to burning and eventual peeling after kadooment

I like the idea about taping down your boobs - I've had some MAJOR issues with that in previous years - what with teensy-tiny tops masquerading as 'large'. I will take this advice come K-day.
