TWO ROUTES FOR CROP OVER

This year, the Crop-Over route will be split into two different ones for Kadooment Day (Carnival Monday). As the festival continues to grow in size, the need for additional space and crowd control is greatly needed. The debate however is whether or not the masqueraders will look kindly upon this as the band leaders will only divulge their choosen route on Kadooment morning.

The first route is the traditional one that exits the National Stadium and turns right going toward the Y junction at Combermere School and left towards Waterford junction, then turn right down Station Hill, to the stop lights at Eastmond Corner, right at Bank Hall Cross Road, onto Black Rock, then Brighton continuing unto Carlton and left onto Spring Garden Highway.

Wayne Simmons, corporate communications specialist of the National Cultural Foundation, said "the second route would see the costumed revellers turning right at the Y junction at Combermere, going along Bush Hall Main Road passing in front of Howard's Supermarket, going along Bank Hall Main Road where they would meet the other bands."

The new proposed route is definately shorter than the traditional one and some masqueraders may either be upset or happy depending on their preference.

The police have also raised some concerns with the new route because this would mean having to deploy limited resources to ensure the safety of the increased numbers on the road.

Some band leaders are however open minded and would like to see the idea given a chance before it is critiqued.

Only time will tell.

REVIVAL OF COHOBBLOPOT

A few years ago, Cohobblopot was once the premiere event for the Crop Over season. The night before Grand Kadooment witnessed many patrons assembling at the National Stadium to enjoy a wonderful display of local and regional acts with some of the biggest Caribbean bands in the business creating blissful mayhem. This was one of the rare times when patrons in Barbados could enjoy all the best artistes from throughout the region on one stage.

Over the years however, the numbers have significantly decreased due to the exclusion of these same Caribbean acts (for reasons unknown). This year the National Cultural Foundation has decided to revive Cohobblopot with the inclusion of many well known celebrities and Soca artistes.
Read below for more info.

If this is any indication of what is to come, I for one will be up front and center. It is about time that we as Caribbean people learn to place our differences aside and embrace our Caribbean counterparts.

This topic is a very "touche" one and will always be open for debate. I however, am a firm believer in CSME....

THE INCREASING PRICE OF CROP OVER

Over the last three years, Crop Over has gotten more and more expensive. While it may seem as if prices are increasing everywhere, the reasons given for costume increases do not warrant such. One popular band leader stated that the price of feathers has increased since last year and another stated that VAT is now included in the costume prices. Here I was thinking that it was included all along since my costume receipt quotes VAT. Even so, if VAT is 15% of the costume price, why then would a VIP costume that cost $350 last year now cost $495 (15% =$52.50). Something has to be wrong with my mathematical skills aka CALCULATOR.

In 2006, costume prices ranged between $195-$250. In 2007, $250-$350 and this year prices have increased to as much as $495. So look out to pay more than $500 next year.

The prices of Crop Over fetes have also increased dramatically. The Trinidad All-inclusive phenomenon is becoming very popular and many fetes are now popping up under the guise of "All-Inclusive". Imagine paying all that money and only getting a Ham Cutter and a soft drink. Very interesting!!!

Some of this year's fete prices are as follows:
Wet Fete -$175
Envy- $200 early bird tickets
Booze Cruise- $175
Party Monarch Finals- $60
Baje fetes- $40
Lara- $300

At this rate, the average crop-over masquerader would have to start saving from now, get a Crop-Over loan or start a Crop-Over meeting turn.
